As an enthusiastic member of Yarcombe Young Farmers Club which has over 80 members between the ages of 16yrs and 26yrs and at the time was secretary to the club, I was asked to represent our county of Devon at the National Floristry competitions at the Malvern Autumn Show September 2013.

The brief of the competition was 'A hand tied design to show BEST OF BRITISH FARMING' to present to the NFU chairman at their annual dinner and dance'.

I naturally felt confident and excited by the prospect of putting my skills as a florist into practise at an event such as this and my mind soon went into overdrive with ideas and my room full of scribbles!

I remained calm right through however as the day arrived and so did my competitors, anxiety had kicked in! YFC is a huge organisation full of talented young people in all areas of proffessions not just farming. The SKILLS FOR LIFE scheme through Young Farmers is a big thing, it aims to encourage all members to take on or broaden skills, hobbies, passions and careers and floristry is very popular!

I chose to create a hand tied using all locally sourced materials so with a bucket, bag and some good secateurs, I set off for a good mornings foraging.  I used bronze Chrysanthemums, Sunflowers, my Auntys cider apples, Blackberries, large Rose Hips, Wheat, English David Austin cut Roses in ivory, Jasmine, ornamental Brassica and then bound Rubus (a cultivated Blackberry) stripped of its leaves for a rustic collar around the hand tie.

By keeping it simple and avoiding the temptation to fiddle, it was enough to showcase my skills and the beauty of the materials used and win me the rather large silver punchbowl and title of 'National Champion'. A nerve racking experience! (This photo is probably the 15th time I heard 'a nice relaxed smile please'!)
