Chelsea Southwest Heat 2014

Chelsea- Southwest heat 2014

For the first time, the three of us entered the prestigious Chelsea Flower Show floristry competition! Yes, we dived in at the deep end but it was so worth it! The brief given was 'a floral collar to be worn at The Woodland Trust dinner and dance'.

In the junior heat Jacalyn came 3rd (far right) with her design using tubes bound with hay, beads, crochet, jasmine vines and a mix of Orchids, berries, carnation petals, small Roses and Chrysanth and Kalanchoe flowers in orange, white, green and cerise. Holly came 4th (centre) with her interpretation of the company's logo using silver wire and stachys leaves with a delicate design of white Orchids, roots, Pussy willow heads and Chincherinchi's!!! With fantastic feedback on workmanship and colouring we came just points away from getting through to the show- not bad for our first attempt!

After being in the industry for nearly 20 years and not competing in any previous competitions, Angie came a brilliant 6th in her group with her woodland fairy inspired collar using Hellebores, silver wire leaves, and coloured wire and Hyacinth pips to represent curling ferns!

Competitions are such a brilliant and enjoyable way of meeting fellow floral enthusiasts and getting our teeth into something a little more challenging, they really put the design and technical skills of a trained florist to the test and keeps us on our toes! Roll on the next competition!
